Tonasket
« on: April 12, 2021, 06:39:53 AM »
So my husband went to Tonasket yesterday to see the land we wanted to buy, and brought some photos and video that I examined since I couldn't make the drive.

Unfortunately I don't think it is for us. The lot was incredible, 20 acres with the option of buying the neighboring lot as well.

The views were amazing, perfect for us!

But the problem was the access road. It was a very dusty dirt road that went up for about a quarter mile, winding, jacknifing, and it seemed to be about 14 feet wide only. There were no railings on the side of the road so an accident on there could plunge you into certain death. A simple skid in the snow and you'd be sliding into a 1000 ft drop! There were also no cat eye stakes on the road and no streetlights, so if that was scary to drive through in day time, imagine at night!

It's too bad, as that would have been the perfect mountain lot to build the Volks Cottage on.

Sorry to hear that, I am not familiar with that area but I guess if you want those awesome views you have to go up!  Is there anyway to create a better access?

Not on our budget, sadly.
But hey that got us considering New Mexico again, so not all is bad.
The lot was 20 acres but there was only about one usable acre. The rest was up a mountain. Homesteading wouldn't have been possible.
The search continues.

Up from Tonasket in Okanogan county we found the PERFECT spot for building the 2 story universal cottage!
There is just one problem: the bottom soil is mostly shale. We're going to get someone there next week to give us an idea of what to expect in terms of septic system costs. If it's a pump system it can cost $20,000 and we're not going to get it.
We looked at 5 different properties this weekend. All would make a great spot for the Volks Cottage. But the one we liked the most is a natural for the 2 story.

I can't wait to hear what the septic system will cost!
