I have both the 2 story universal and the 20'x30' 1.5 story plans and I am planning to build in between them 20'x32' The question I have is can I increase the pier spacing on the 1.5 story to 8' centers to allow the building size I am looking for. To me the dead loads should be less on the 1.5 story foundation beams than on the 2 story but figured I should make sure  :)

If more people took personal responsibility for themselves this country would not be in the mess it is.

I don't have the details on those plans, but I'm certain John will check in. In the meantime it is almost always possible to increase the spacing. The size of the beam is one thing that would have to be adjusted larger. Another factor is the bearing capacity of the soil.

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

agree 100% bearing is not a problem as we are probably going to have to hammer into solid rock for the piers :) and on the plans for both the beams match so I am guessing it should work. I dug out one rock that was in the way of my road and learned my lesson. It was about the size of a suburban. From now on it is drill and crack it off :)

I am traveling (and getting caught in weather delays) and don't have access to the plans themselves here. But, yes, the loads to the foundation are somewhat less for the 1.5 story than the full 2-story. So you could use the spacing of the larger plan.
None of us are as smart as all of us.
