I'm for the compacts too as I'm off grid.  They are great.

Watch for LEDs to replace the CFLs in a few years.

I generally run 12 gauge wire and use 20 amp breakers. 14 Gauge was considerably less expensive last time I looked at Home Depot however with the new improved pricing structure and the HD sale that was in effect. But for the long haul I prefer 20 amp circuits. You never know what I might plug in. 
I have done so much with so little for so long that today I can do almost anything with absolutely nothing.

Currently LEDs are very directional but they may improve on that.  The put out a small bright spot but it takes a ton o them to come close to a CFL, therefore, apples to apples savings aren't there.
