About 5 minutes after I wrote that, I found some small charge controllers that cost a quarter of what that one did.  But after I read the article it looks like I'll have a better idea of what to do.  I could use the box it comes with except that it has to be disconnected every time it's not charging enough.  Not reasonable for me.  Probably not very reasonable for anyone.

The "Mother Earth News "Has an article this month about a new solor panel that fits right over a metal roof. Looks pretty neat and the article really explains the costs vs. the returns. These panels are glued directly to the metal roof and attached together under the ridge of the roof. The following is the link to the article .
