Hummm, I doubt that is code compliant :)  It would be interesting to try to build stairs like this - each tread would meet the center pole at a slightly different angle.

Another crazy idea....Two poles made from heavy pipe or steel
inside each is a lead screw. There is a slot on the inside of each column.
A small step like platform in the middle has holes on each side that
the columns go thru and is attached to the the lead screw so that the platform goes up or down when the lead screw is turned.
There is a 'T' handled bar welded to the platform used for grabing onto and has buttons under the handles for up and down. It is also a place you can support a bag or box of laundry on.
At the bottom under the floor, the lead screws have a sprocket on there ends, and there is a motor generator in between with a smaller sprocket. There is a chain that goes around and is driven by or from the smaller sprocket.
Power makes it go up slowly and it drives the generator function on the way down to help recover the power.

This is intended to be a slow procedure for people with things like
arthiritus. For non code areas, etc.
A third pole would be right behind where the persons back would be
so they would have a safety to lean back against, as well as a fire pole
exit in case of power fail.
I warned you, it is a crazy idea, but I think it would be safe and practical if you don't mind slow.

That would be cool for my loft of my 200 sf cabin. I have a pull down attic type stair but I'm thinking I'd like to make it out of logs maybe??? Not sure if the Attic stair will be inviting for people to go up there?

But I think I may build log stairs like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDszPdGrnZo

Cool - I'm trying to figure out if I could get these to work on one of my diagonal log braces.
