Good overview links to understanding the early evolution of the frame house. These were the owner-builders of thier time. Keep it simple. Farmers could build a house with machine cut lumber and nails.

Not much has really changed... well, nail guns, OSB and plywood make it now stronger and easier to build.
None of us are as smart as all of us.
