When I was a child, I used to spend my summers at the city of Petropolis, about 1 hour from Rio.

There is a very peculiar and charming cottage, that always fascinated me.

The most famous Brazilian inventor, aviation pioneer, Santos Dumont, designed it for himself in 1918, and it is today a small museum in his honor.

The little house with a different roof has a stone basement, an entrance deck, an open first floor with corner fireplace, corner desk, alternate stairs, and a loft with a bed with drawers (with view), a small place to hang clothes and a bathroom with creative hot water system.

There is another entrance at the loft with a little bridge, and hidden over the roof is a small (scary) platform to see the sky.

The house was unusually small for someone of his fame and position, is a great example of well designed small space, siting in a very step lot.

A neat little house -I noticed the alternating tread stairs and it mentioned that there were more inside the house.

WOW!!!

Wouldn't I love a small village of those.

Looking at this makes me feel like a little boy again. :D

I love the ancient scary platform.  While he used a beam, similar things can be done with logs.

I also like the small windows in the dormer.  In fact I guess I like all of it.  Thanks for sharing this J. Carlos.

It's great to be able to see things from other countries, how they are different and how they are alike.  This media allows us to visit places most of us would never see.

Nice place  :)  Steeeeeepppp lot , glad I didn't have to build it . Man oh man the staging required to build that place  :o

I like the little window dormer  as well . And the funk dog roof in this view,

Thanks for the pictures , and again I'm glad I didn't have to build it , quite a job that was. :)

A most charming and unique house. A very good example of what Americans like to call the "Jefferson stair" (T. Jefferson may well have gotten credit for an idea he BROUGHT to America!).

There is a freedom in the compactness and intentionality of this house. I think it perhaps helps to focus the mind and we appreciate that --- No wasted space, no wasted movements. The desk in the corner is very efficient. Those little stairways cannot be negotiated in a sloppy thoughtless manner - in doing so you would probably fall off the roof trying to raise the flag!
