I have seen several pics here of people using exposed beams for the loft in their 1-and-a half-story.  I love this look and want to use it in at least part of our 2 story home (currently in the planning phase).   I found a  local source for kiln-dried 3 x 10 doug fir beams ($9.00 a line ft) but they are rough-cut.  I am thinking planed beams would be easier to use since I want to use standard un-exposed joists for some rooms.

Anyone have any advice on the best way to do this, or on ways to hide wiring with an open ceiling?

Thanks

You will want to run all the wiring in the walls and this will be obvious to the electrician since he will be there after the framing and floors are in.

More critial is the need for ductwork and plumbing traps. These should be done in joist and drywall sections of the floor.

You will need to calulate the spans and spacing for the beams you suggest. You can use 2x6 T&G decking on beam spacings up to 4'.
