Four guys, loaded plane, high altitude, summer, late afternoon - what could go wrong?

I'm no pilot. I'm a complete layman.
It just didn't look they could get any lift.
That being said, if I took off with the lives of 3 people in my hands and I could barely get above the tree line, I would look at landing it.
From the outside looking in the situation did seem avoidable.    I might be missing something. I feel sorry for the passengers.

Im no pilot either but even their takeoff seemed to take ages
