Insulating pulldown stairs?

Is there a decent way to insulate a set of pulldown stairs?

I need access to my "attic" and am planning on using the fold-down stairs.  It appears that they fit nicely in between the ceiling joists.  What I am thinking of doing, is mounting them as far up into the joists as I can, and then building a small insulated cover that I can insert into the hole in the ceiling.

Is there an easier way?

We have those here at home. It's either something like you describe or build a box for in the attic. Have that insulated a to cover the upper portion and hinged to swing out of the way, if there's clearance.

If you do the way you suggest you might be able to glue a sheet of foam on the board you see from below when it is closed, and cover it with thin plywood.  ???

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
