What materials - grade/quality

Could we start a materials list (as a guide) that would give us an idea of the quality and grade of materials that we should look at and consider....

A list that would guide us towards the materials to use....like-wise would guide us away from stuff that will only give us trouble down the road....

For an example - John's info on double hung windows....very useful....
