Puzzling Mosaic in Tree Bark??

Does anyone have any idea of what did this?



I think it's done by a router bug or a router bird.
I've never seen anything quite like this before.

I think it's general -- I posted a questionable one now too.

I wonder about small beetles being gotten by wood peckers?  Wood peckers do similar larger holes around here and stuff them with acorns.  Maybe a different diet there.
