Trying to wrap my head around how to construct the staircase and could use a little help.

They will be apx. 32 in. wide. 2 stringers or 3? I suppose it might depend on what I use for treads which is my next question.

Carpet may be the safest tread surface but I hate carpet. Unfinished or lightly finished softwood seems like it might be O.K. but I am concerned ease of cleaning. Hardwood would look good and clean up easily but would probably be the least safe.

Basic things like how to attach the stringers to the landings are confusing my fragile mind. If anyone knows of a thread here or a link elsewhere that shows good detail of the nuts and bolts of this process I would really appreciate being directed to it.

Is this being built to code?  Many big box stores sell stringers pre cut, and not much more expensive ($10 IIRC) than buying the lumber and cutting in yourself.

No inspections, but hopefully built to code or beyond.

I may check out the pre cut stringers, but to be honest I think I have a decent handle on how to do that part. Its putting all the pieces together that has me slightly boondoggled. Especially how the stringers attach at the top landing. I know it is probably ridiculously simple but I just have not yet found a photo or diagram that details that part.

Thanks!

It is just about impossible to use a precut stringer and have it work. The floor to floor height varies. Do remember a code stair is 36 or more wide above the handrails and not less than 31.5" below if railed on one side or 27" if railed on both. I believe the link is stairways.org

Simpson does have hangers that can be used to hang the stair.

I like to build a wall or doorway under them and put a closet in, sheetrock that closet to protect the framing from fire. You can attach the stringers to plywood and stick a cleat under that to support them. Always remember this is the exit. On a really bad night two firefighters in full gear are going to be carrying somebody down there in a big hurry... they must not fail.
