Is the web helpful for BUILDING a house?

We have documented a lot of links and resources on this site that are helpful for LEARNING about home design & construction. We have also had a recent thread that is helpful for ESTIMATING COSTS.

However, when it comes down to the job of actually finding the materials and people to put your project together have you found Internet sites that really make that task easier?

When I think of sites that make finding programmers and web designers easy — sites like http://www.scriptlance.com and http://www.rentacoder.com — I realize I know of nothing similar for construction help.

Why isn't there a site where you put in your zip code and a description of the type of work you need and then trade folks or suppliers make offers and/or respond to your request?

most of the time great help and advice.

i have found the things i do myself are better than many contractors do.  and if u design smart u can build with good results

There are a number of such sites I looked at before deciding I will do most everything myself.  Like mark says, I may take a lot longer, but it will be done to my satisfaction, not somebody's "good enough". (Not to disparage any tradesman's work!)

So, I don't know if it would really work, not having used them.

One note: alot of folks don't register with these services.  You best might still find the right outfit the old fashioned way; talk to folks locally, and the contractor desk at the lumber yard can probably steer you to known good folks.

Wouldn't it be helpful if there were a site that used the eBay rating model for contractors and suppliers where they would accumulate a rating? Then the users of the service or products could rate their satisfaction and we could read these before we buy.

Now, that would be useful information!
