$300 for non-volunteers or $48 annual fee up front for those who have an emergency.

Think of that ... $300 to turn in a drunk driver as advocated by thousands of our road signs.

NM has a special #394 number for free drunk reporting from cell phones
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

OTOH, what do you do to prevent people from making all those stupid unnecessary calls to 9-1-1?

I have no answer to that question myself, but I do know that unnecessary calls escalate the costs for 9-1-1 services.

"Education" is the answer, but how do you educate the masses of idiots?

Funny a 911 fee shows up on every one of my cell phone bills.  It is already costing me $24 a year.

That is, I believe, money that goes to pay for the enhanced 911 system; the system that finds your address from the phone number you dialed from. That's a different tax from this piece of crap.

I believe the article posted is a bit misleading. There's a more complete article in the "Tracy Press" that describes this as a fee for service when the fire department responds to medical emergencies and car accidents. This is pretty standard stuff for small EMS systems.

Looks to be a fee for the response call, for when the fire department responds to a medical emergency. Not a fee for the telephone call or any other emergency services.

That's the way I read it, anyway.

Actually they should be paying you to report the offenses rather than penalize you if you report them. This is just grasping for straws or should I say revenue.

I guess you'd be a pessimist if you paid the $48 up front anticipating at least one 911 call in the coming year!  Although I've heard stories of people calling 911 because McDonalds shorted them an order of fries!  But it was ok...911 was busy!

Once again everybody most pay the price because of a few idiots.
