Anyone have any idea how to go about framing a bump out window? My better half is pretty insistent on having one behind the kitchen sink.

The Idea is to create about a 1 ft, shelf on window above sink. My thoughts are to frame the window normally, then add another 2 by 6 box of the same size on the outside of it, bracing it from below and creating a small shed roof over it. Not sure how to go about framing a space for insulation around it.

I know it seems like a lot of bother for an extra 6 in. of sill space, but sacrifices must be made!

Any help much appreciated.

I think I would just look around and find a "greenhouse window".

I cut 2x4's to fit around the outside of the window opening and attached them to the wall framing with screws. I stacked up 4 layers of these then covered them with OSB, felt etc. like the rest of the house. The window installs normaly. Unless this is under a sofit you will need to work out some sort of flashing or little roof over the bumpout.

Here's a pic of mine.

weird, I posted this about an hour ago and when I checked back it disappeared. Oh well, round 2-

I am trying to figure out how to frame a bump out window. My better half would like one behind the sink, creating about a 1 ft. shelf (sill). My thoughts are to frame it as normal, then build another frame the same size using 2 by 6's and attach it to the outside wall, then build supports underneath and a small shed roof on the top. I am unsure how to frame to accommodate insulation on the outside of the protruding box.

I know this seems like a lot of trouble to create an extra 6 inches of sill, but sacrifices must be made!

Any info on this would be much appreciated.

One way would be to bump out a whole piece of wall.

As far as the missing post I have clicked the tab to close it instead os the post button. I don't know how I could do that other than having too many thoughts competing at the same time.  d* d*
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

I found the explanation dug. One topic in "general" and the other in "off topic" I merged them to here in "general"

You are not crazy lie I am.   ;D

probably crazier, but I do feel a little better now. Couldn't figure how it could just disappear!

Thanks for the suggestions. I like your idea Scott, very simple. For some reason I just did not think of laying the boards flat on the wall as you did. My wife saw it also and loves the little side shelves and recessed light. Now I have to do that as well- Thanks a lot! No really, thanks a lot.
