I've been shopping an entry digital SLR for awhile but have been putting off the purchase.  Last Saturday, after my daughter's play, I was comparing pictures that I took vs. my neighbor's pictures with his D5000.  My point and shoot just could not work worth a dang... esp at the higher ISO settings.  That was the nail in the coffin.  I bought the same bundle that he had, and also bought it from Costco.  They have an amazing bundle price on the camera, extra lens, and accessories....

You may have to copy and paste this link...

I was very jealous of the raw image quality.
My neighbor is good at post processing, but only did a "little" work to spruce these up:

(My daughter played "Velma" in "Chicago"  )

So now I have an $800 camera gear and $0.25 worth of talent

Pictures of the kid...priceless...
A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work any day, but building something with your own hands beats anything.

Your claim to two bits of talent will soon pay huge dividends with a little practice.  Any new camera takes a little time to make friends with, and with that great New Mexico subject matter you will be a pro in no time.   Also your daughter is a very beautiful young lady.

Thanks.. she's a smart kid too.  A bit of a capitalist as well.  She has been running her own version of a "fund raiser" at school to make $$ for drama travel.  She buys cases of candy at Sam's and has been selling them at school with 50% profit. She sells 125 to 150 bars a week.  I told her to keep selling all year  ;D

That's a good camera Frank. I always used Nikons until the last few years. Nikon makes a better body than Cannon, but not by much, but Cannon makes better lenses, but not by much.

Give it some time and you'll have the hang of it although those pictures are darn good.

A little hint if you aren't going to shoot in RAW and process after. The small pocket cameras always produce sharper pictures straight out of the box because they know mosst people won't do much in the way of post processing.

You can increase the sharpness in your SLR in the menu. Just crank it up a few ticks and try it. Go up more if need be. This only work on JPEG's.

Now you need to start looking at additional lenses.

This should be your next accessory purchase

HHHUUUMMM.....This have anything to do with the other post about the Christmas kitchen counter redo?   ;)

Which I would never do in the winter time nor at Christmas time unless we had company coming of course.  Then it would be OH YA I can get'er done in two days and seven days later we are finished with the tear out.  Sort of like Christmas Vacation part III and looking like - Sweetie pie don't get so stressed I am almost positively sure you might have a counter top by Easter.....   That is after we reassemble and re-glue the old cabinets and replace the plumbing to the meter in the street.  Sometimes things just don't go as smooooooth as I plan ya' know.  ;D

That is a nice lens by the way.  It will fit on your camera real well.  Good balance, very good optics..... loved it; slobbered all over one at Idaho Camera the other day....

I'll be watching for ticking packages :)

I have the Canon L series 200 f2.8. I can get away with a 2x telextender but I also have a less expensive Canon 600. Not nearly as fast as the L but a lot cheaper.

I want the Canon 800. A bargin at a paltry ten grand...used :o
I expect I'll go to my grave waiting for it ;D

We got a Pentax DSLR, because it was inexpensive, and there's a bazillion lenses that fit it. It's been great! I'm shopping for a cheap point-n-shoot for the wife, because she's intimidated by the SLR.

Since the subject of unattainable wishes has come up...

Hasselblad H4D-60 Camera with 60 megapixels. Yeah, all in one picture.

Camera Body, Back, Viewfinder (no lens)  $39,995.00  Yes the decimal is in the correct place.  :o :o

When I was selling the roll film versions for a couple grand, 25 - 30 years ago I marveled at the ability of some people to afford them. I still wonder today.

At least I won't be spending $50 a week on theater tickets for awhile!

We have found the Panasonic Lumix to be about the most camera for the money from telescopic to wide angle to macro including decent video.  It was featured on Kevin Kelly Cool Tools.

The Lumix is one of the better, i not the best point 'n' shoot cameras. It has a great lens and good feature mix.  :)

I love digital more all the time. I covered the Williamsburg Grand illumination Sunday. These would have been a long process with film.
