I think we have the oldest working Courthouse in the state and we seem to enact the oldest laws.

17000 people in our county as of a while back.  1700 people in our town.  Going to the post office could really ruin your month.

That's a good one Glenn. Maybe if the slaves didn't have to work so much they'd have more time for things like jury duty.

It's an interesting problem.  If we agree it is tyranny to dragoon the citizenry into jury service, should those acccused of crimes be excused from trial if there are not enough jurors?

In 1916 the Supreme Court ruled that services required by the state such as jury duty or military service does not constitute "involuntary servitude".  cough cough

It is at least inconvenient or more to say the least though.

I understand that another gold country town has had to resort to this move also.  Nevada City I think it was.
