I'm a fan of both ideas and a fan of competing currencies in our current marketplace; let the people decide who they trust and what they want to use as money. If they made it law that all gold/silver/copper/nickel/whatever coins/bars were now legal tender, I'd wager you would see a flock of people who would prefer to buy/trade/sell using that form of currency.
