Wild Turkey

The bird... not the stuff in the bottle!

I don't have a decent picture darn it but it's still exciting as all get out. Twice this week we've seen two hens and 18 !!, count 'em, 18 young ones (poults) strolling across the south end of the burn pit. Walking right across the road up to our property. I tried following them for a better picture but as expected they kept far enough ahead to make that effort less than worthwhile. Could be a good Thanksgiving.

We also have several flocks running around here. It was new to me when I first got here as I had never seen any in the valley.

Yeah we have plenty wild turkeys grazing all around...If one of my neigbors wanted to bring me one that they shot I might not object... look damned tasty to me....

We have a herd of turkeys that sit on our picnic table at work. From inside the office they aren't more than 8' away and they watch us as much as we watch them and I'm not sure who drools more....

I love watching them...and hunting them. I've turkey hunted since I was old enough to hold a gun. I don't get many pictures because the bears keep them stirred up but this is a video I got earlier in the year.

One of my favorite stories is from high school when I was learning to gobble with a mouth call. For one year only (I wonder why) they combined a lot of classses and had one big study hall in the auditorium.

When things were really quiet and Ernie Dyrelie (Study hall teacher with some anger management problems) would turn his back, I'd give my best gobble. The whole place would crack up, and Ernie would go berserk. I was able to keep that up for the entire school year.

no wild turkeys in Nova Scotia growing up... but they are everywhere in the USA.... I guess that is one good thing about living down here....
