outbuildings surrounding small house

I am looking to see if anyone has thought about or gone ahead and created any outbuildings (such as studios, sleeping cabins, etc.) outside of their small house.  I'm interested in building a small house but think that it might be too-small for year round living.

Would also like to learn of any plans people have come accross for homes in the 1200-1500 s.f. range that they like.  Exploring all options at this point.

I'm planning a shop and a guest cottage to go along with our little house. The main house is about 400 sq. ft. The guest cottage will be around 200.
