Big brother will love this. I bet it was his idea.

I ditched my cell about a year ago and haven't looked back. Handy yes but not worth it.

That was a major consideration to get all of the phones off the one they couldn't monitor and on to the GSM and higher systems a couple years ago.  The big upgrade and non-support of the old system caper.  d*

Absolutely - I've been saying this for years - the  I Phone has a few new apps but all now have the capability as well as non-GPS enabled - tracking by tower triangulation.

Your phone can be turned on from the outside without your knowledge and all of your actions and speach withing mic. range listened to.

Same goes to the computer you are typing on right now.  They can turn on your mic and listen to all activity within range.

I may not be doing anything they are interested in but that's not the point.

A tip -- next time you have that intimate relationship within range of your cell phone pull the battery out -- turning it off is not good enough. [crz]

My cell phone is so old you can't hardly buy batteries for it anymore. I don't think it has all the trick components.
I have done so much with so little for so long that today I can do almost anything with absolutely nothing.

Okay, if you don't have a mic plugged in, can they use the internal speaker as a mic.

The cell companies have always had the ability to get a very good idea of where your phone was located. The only differences between today and 8-10 years ago when I worked for sprint PCS for a while is that today they can come up with the location much quicker and it is probably more accurate. Back then the info took a quite a while to research; it was a slow and cumbersome process. The process was not available to the ordinary everyday customer service operator. We used the ability mostly for solving unusual or severe call dropping problems as well as in some billing disputes. On occasion there were cases where requests came via court orders.

As for the PC speaker, as far as I know from building/servicing computers there is no connection between the speaker and mic.  ???

Personally I'm more concerned about getting head-on'd by a drunk driver on the way to or from the mountains than anyone eavesdropping on my conversations.  Besides, I'm not a slave to the phone. It's off most of the time. Very few folks have the number. We only turn 'em on when we need to call or want to check if there are messages. Plus we use a prepaid "throw away" phone, registered to a fictitious name/address with a throw away email address. Pick one up at Wal-Mart anytime

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

Most laptops have a built in mic that can be programmed remotely as can a standard PC with a mic. plugged in.

I have the one of the new CIA/FBI enabled cell phones - a Blackberry with GPS -- good for down to 3 meters from what I have tried already.

Let em get me -- free food.  When they get close I'll leave it on and toss it in someone elses car.  They haven't chipped me yet ...that I know of.... hmm

I'm with Don. I learned a long time ago to not say it, if you don;t want it overheard.
I also use prepaid registered to a non person. Peter Pan has had a lot of phones as has Billy Hill ;D

Not mine.  I'm behind a NAT router with a hardware firewall, and my first 1056 ports don't answer any pings from anybody.  As far as anyone looking for me, I don't exist.  You can check yours at the Shields Up! scanner at Gibson Research.  It will tell you if you have any ports open that might be used to enter your computer.

thanx for the info, i am not very computer literate and when i followed their tests i came through with flying colors. nice to know.
unless we recognize who's really in charge, things aren't going to get better.

No one in my cell phone.

glenn kangiser

So you don't have a cell phone, Stink, or you just don't want to believe that big brother knows where you are at every moment of the day -- and can even listen any time the battery is in it, without your knowledge?

Hot date with the Hog? hmm

Big brother knows about it if you have a cell phone. rofl

They're very self conscious because of their size....and hide when you open the back up. The Government has promised to make them large if they spy for them.

It was in a coded song back in the Nixon years:

One pill makes you larger
and one pill makes you small
and the one that Tricky Dick gives you
don't do anything at all

Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

Thanks. I thought I had all the bases covered and it turned out I was correct.  :) GRC has been around quite a while; always loads of good info from them.

Having a cell phone is like having a new leash on life. There are times when it comes in handy. And other times when it is a PIA.
I have done so much with so little for so long that today I can do almost anything with absolutely nothing.

glenn kangiser

Unfortunately - to be competitive and not miss any of the work necessary to survive, I need my cell phone.

"Having a cell phone is like having a new leash on life."  Well said des.

Not too long a leash either.  Big brother has our number.

All of the above too.

My NBA player buddy knows I can make anything he can ever dream up of needing.  Just finished making gates for his mile of 8' high fence he and family friends just tackled and installed. Heck of an accomplishment for big city boys.  I put automatic openers on two of them including making the gates and sliding beam.  Repaired his fence roll squeeze tightener better than factory. Currently putting sprockets on a gear reduction for his composter.

Yeah -- you're right Peter -- I am bigger than life.  I only carry the cell phone to give the less fortunate underpriveledged ones who are out of range access to the priveledge of having my services.  It's kind of like...a super-hero charity thing.

Big brother has now crawled up into your hands free listening device and is watching your every move.  Note that these are now mandatory for California drivers...or the wired version - police state.
