Has anyone built a cabin using existing concrete piers (ones you didn't put in yourself or have someone else put in?

There was a cabin on our property some time ago (built in late 90s or early 2000s). Only the piers are left.  Still in the ground, sturdy.  What is your opinion on using these?

* I know someone is going to say ask a contractor ... good idea ... we may or may not and are just looking for answers from someone who's "been there" before, for right now

Probably one of the main things is if they meet the spacing required in your plan for proper support of your structure.  If they are not in the proper location it would be better to move them than to compromise the stability of your building.

Please put your area in your sig line so we can assist with location specific answers.

If the spacing is OK you could dig 1 up to see how deep and how big the footing pad is.  I'm curious about a cabin built 10 years ago and now only piers are left.  Did it burn or did the builders not have the good fortune of using this GREAT site to build a sturdy cabin  ;D

Yes, it burned (according to the owners, it was an electrical storm.  Since everything they've done to/with the property has been 1/2-@$$ed, it's not surprising that it might actually be wiring.  Subfloor is still there, hubby is tearing it down, thinking of at least building a deck on top of it for the time being until we decide what to do.  At least we'd have a decent raised space for entertaining.  PLus can pitch tents on the desk.

If it was me I would find a way to make use of them.  If the spacing doesn't work for your cabin, make a barn out of it.  But, I would also scrap any of their electric service if its still in place.  Put new copper ground rods in and start from scratch.  Fire scares me.
