building on piers...

We are looking at building a cabin (20x36) and are researching foundation systems and want to ask if anyone who has built on piers is sorry that they did and would they go another way.  This is certainly the most affordable system for us (NH), but I wonder if it may be better to pay more for a block or poured frostwall.

I am concerned with future resale value and overall energy efficiency and have not lived in a space built on piers.  Looking for any and all insight from those who have built their own place.   Tks.

My opinion (which is not worth much) is that they are fine as long as they are put in properly and in the right soil. I'm not sorry. They are perfect for my application for a lot of reasons.

Resale is another matter. As a rule, they bring less than other foundations.

I'm using piers and I'm happy with the results so far. Peter is right about the soil issue. If you have firm soil piers will hold up a house just as well as anything else. I compared cost on my project 16x26 and pier and beam was $750 vs. $2000 for a full grade beam and block foundation. This is DIY cost ofcourse. As for energy efficency you're going to have to insulate something either the floor or the foundation wall so it may be a wash cost wise if you are very far off the ground. If you have resale in mind pour concrete.
