Hi Jimmy.  The hubby and I live south of Frankston, off of hwy.155.  Just noticed your mention of building in Canton.  Small world, huh?  I posted the pic.s of our 2 year old house and a couple of other DIY homes, earlier.  Did you say you were building the farmhouse? You are right, tons of neat stuff at Canton, just about anything a person could want.  Although, our very best source of bargains, on this last house, was online. Of course, you have to know what you want and what is a good price.  Do you use the surplus lumber yard in Athens?  Or in Tyler?  The unfinished cabinets, at the Surplus place on the east (south) loop in Tyler, are the best we have found for the price...99% solid wood, not a lot of particle board. And they have a huge selection.  Also, the last time we were in the Athens Surplus, they had started handling appliances. The prices and quality looked pretty good.  We are planning on trailering a lot of materials to Colorado, when we get started up there.  Unless we find some great bargains up there.  But, we already know how to scrounge for them, in our area.  Good luck with your project. We will be looking for progress reports.  Nanda & John Ripley

Hello nandajor, ;D
I am building NEAR Canton in a very rural area. The post office tells me I am in Big Sandy. But, It is very close to the intersection of FM 1002 and hwy 154.
Yes, I am building the 2 story Farm House. I have modified the original plan so that the footprint is 20x40. I have also modified the second floor walls to 6 foot high with cathedral ceilings. I have planned 12 windows upstairs so I can enjoy the wooded view.
My wife Will not let me get any of those great deals at the surplus places. She wants the old farmhouse look with the newness of the  materials from Home Depot and Lowes..

The house is looking great, Jimmy.  Just a note, the wood cabinets at the Tyler store (I think it is something Salvage) are new. We ordered cabinets for the 2nd DIY project, the lake house. Supposedly, they were the same cabinets that the pro builders were using.  And they looked fine, but believe me, they were not even near the quality of those from the surplus place.  But, hey ya'll, nobody is more hard-headed than I am, about what I like (except the hubby). Everybody has their preferences and ideas.  That's what makes the world interesting, isn't it?  I think this site and the smart folks that contribute and manage it, is the most fascinating thing I have found in a while.  Watch out for this old East Texas heat, and don't over-do.  Good luck and will be checking for progress reports. Nice to "meet" you.  Nanda R.
