Hey all, my cabin progress is coming along well...but I need some help/advise from you all.  My property /Cabin location is in a total dead spot for my cell phone.  I attempted a cell phone booster but it did not work as there is no cell signal at all where I am.  So here is my question for your advice, I can get local phone service for 45 bucks a month.  I can get internet service for 45 bucks  month.  I can get both for 59 a month. My initial thought was to get the internet service and then get a cell phone booster from verizon that works via the internet and gps.  That way when people come up they can use there phones if needed.  With the internet I can also hook up security cameras that I would be able to check out over my phone when I am not there.  This is important as obviously I am not there more than I am.  This would also open the door to potential wifi enabled thermostat options.  So what would you guys do or what have you done in this situation.  The phone is very important for me as if something happens while I am there, alone or with the family we need a way of making a call.  Any suggestions.  I am leaning toward just the internet and the wireless booster as it is only a one time fee and the landline is monthly.  Open to suggestions.  thanks again Scott

We landed a land line at our ranch and thought we were on easy street last fall.

We can not get cell service here at.  We have got good cell signal 2.5 miles away.  We are located in a long sheltered valley.

I don't know if you seen it but we recently added satellite internet.  WA WHO!!!!!!

Some of our 'close' neighbors about 3 miles away bundled with ATT because they can get a good strong cell phone signal.  So they get internet and phone for less than we pay for internet.  Very lucky, very very lucky.  We are pretty well committed to year around up here now.  So the land line and internet are pretty much a got to thing.  (How else can we keep track with what it happening with CP..... ??? )

thanks rick, if you look on verizon's website for coverage, it is literally just my property that is in a dead zone.  if I go a half mile up the road either way I have service.  Its pretty frustrating but it's my luck lol

The worse problem we had believe it or not was - getting a physical address.  No physical address, no phone and no satellite internet,  no mail service and no 911 service.  (We had a PO Box we sat up before we sold our valley property and used it for our mail.)  Heck you can not even vote.

We tried and tried to no avail to get an address when we put in our two RV pads.  Then a couple years latter when we built our shop still to no avail no address.  The country building services and planing and zoning both were adamant.  No permanent residence - no address.

Then we sold our home and moved up here in our fifthwheel.  It was after a couple months we sort of blew up.  With no permanent address we could not get a phone.  We could not vote in elections.  Try and tell your banks and credit unions when they are sending letters needing phyical addresses.  (This is law because of Home land Security and BATF from what we were told.)  Just try and tell them you live on a ranch you own free and clear but can not get an address.    I finally had had enough and started making phone calls from our our cellular phone spot 2.5 miles away.

Strange it was when the county 911 office got involved we ended up with a physical address.  They claim adamantly when we got our building permit for the shop we should have been issued an address automatically and a 911 location.  They could not believe it.  If there is a place that needs a 911 location is a shop.  If there is anywhere something bad is going to happen it is there.    I heard latter on there was a little shake up at planing and zoning and the way they were handling addressing because of our case.

We got one of those mini cell towers that connects via the internet (ours is AT&T) it works very well.
The physical address might be a problem. The mini tower uses a GPS fix and matches with the physical address. Ours didnt match (and our 911 location is not right) and it took many call to AT&T to override the GPS location.
Works great now...

Thanks again all.  Fortunately for me the first thing that I did was get a physical address and I was even able to do this with just a camper in place.  In our area they take 911 very serious, it also helped that the tax collector uses this info, since they want there money it made it easier.  I actually ordered my phone and internet today as they cut me a deal I couldnt refuse.  Now it will be interesting to see who will pay to bring the line from the street to my two telephone poles on the property then underground from the last pole to my cabin.  With my luck I am sure it will be me.  Kinda stinks when there is only one provider and you can't bid them against each other.  Oh well we shall see what happens... fingers crossed.

My property has landline available, but no DSL or cablemodem options.  I use my Cricket WiFi hotspot and it does pretty well, but I need true broadband in order to connect via the VPN for work.  Satellite internet has too much latency for that.  There are Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP) that set up towers in remote areas where you can get your internet via a transceiver that costs about $100.  There is a service in my area that has a tower on top of Crowder's Moutain about 11 miles from me across the border in NC (I'm in SC) that I can get 5 Mbps for $50/month.  They offer higher bandwidth packages, too.

My brother uses a similar service at his farm near Marion, NC and he uses it extensively for all kinds of purposes and it works very well for him.  I had to really dig to find this company -- these places don't seem to advertise as I think they should, but if you do some digging you may find someone that offers such a service.

Peace,
Ray
