Every once in awhile, I get an email, that appears to be from someone in my contact list, but is not.

This last one was spooky... it had my name in the subject line.

The email appears to be from one of my contacts, as their name is associated with the email.. but the email and domain are not something I recognize.  An example :

Bob Smith <cardboardbox@yahoo.com>

I know Bob Smith, and he is in my address book, but cardboardbox@yahoo.com is not his email.  The email then only contains a hyperlink to some odd promotion.

Did I get hacked?  Did my contacts get lifted, or does this problem exist on Bob Smith's computer?

Frank I am getting the same thing.  But I have narrowed mine down to FB (Social Network) I think.  Got one from that contact list and another from my E-mail contact but the last is on both. Go figure.  If you try to repond to the sender(your friend) it re-directs it to the junk address.

I also updated my Microsoft and now my MSN hotmail account requires a Log-in each time I go there.  I hate that.  Even if I tick the "save password" box it just ignores the box.

I get one of those once in a while as well.  Weirdest thing I have seen lately is not getting spammed for like 24 hours!

We even got hijacked into a Chinese search engine.  Held us captive for about a week.  I called my ISP and every one I could think of.  Nobody seemed to ever see or hear of such a thing.

Because of that I did subscribe to a ID protection firm recommended by Dave Ramsey.

Hope everything is okay.

It's been a while but I get them. I even got a few from me :-\

From what I understand, it's from a Trojan that grabs all your contacts.

Usually happens when your contact got hacked, not you.
New Mexico.  Better than regular Mexico.

I get those once in a while and normally send the person it is purportedly from a note to tell them and suggest they check their computer for malware, etc. Don't know if they ever do or if they find anything, but N_NM is right, it is usually coming because the other folks are compromised.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

We have been getting those with my SIL's name, and now people are getting them from us, so it's time to scrub the old computer. My wife opened the first one from my SIL- I wonder if that's how it got into ours?
