My vinyl window frames protrude about 1 and 1/2 inch from the exterior sheathing and the tongue and groove siding I am installing is 3/4 inch V-groove. I was originally planning to trim around the windows using the same 3/4 inch material but now I realize that if I did that the trim would end up flush, or maybe even extend beyond the vinyl window frame. I think you would want the window frame to extend at least 1/2 inch out from the trim, especially at the bottom sill or water would drip off and get behind the wood.

Three options I have thought of-

1-  Trim with 1 inch material first and butt siding to it
2-  Really thin trim, 1/4 or 3/8 inch (don't much like this option)
3-  No trim, butt siding to window frame.

Any suggestions?

walkabout

I went with 5/4 (one inch) Miratec (but you could use natural wood too) to give a boxed look and liked it.

basically it is like this:

All interestions were caulked. i.e between siding and trim and also between trim and window.

ditto walabout.

Install 5/4 trim first. Then the siding. Leave a slight gap between siding and trim for expansion. Clear caulk the joint.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
