Watched this documentary today - very disturbing...  I always had my questions about all the medications - seemed like they were coming out w/new ones everyday...  Psychiatric patients would start on a couple, then end up on 4 or 5 or more & it wasn't making a difference, just making them zombies.  My experience w/psychiatry & my oldest son who has Tourettes Syndrome & was very active & impulsive... all the medications they pushed on him w/no results except for side-effects...  I find out from my son, years later, that the psychiatrist would take him to the store & buy him candy during his appt, no therapy.  I used to beg him to give me some advice on raising my son - he never once did...  All he wanted to do was give him drugs.  When you watch this documentary & see the history of psychiatry, it will make you very angry.

Haven't watched the whole link yet but, both psychiatrists and regular MD's now have a whole rainbow of pills ( i.e.; Zoloft or Xanax) to more gently produce a serene, emotionally numb zombie before they realize what is happening to them. Knock enough high and low points off and you eventually have only a straight line left.

You have probably guessed I am suspicious of many (not all) psychotropic  drugs. Some are effective when used for some problems (lithium for severe bi-polar folks)

Sassy, I am sorry you had a bad experience.  I agree that the drugs are probably a little over prescribed and there are definitely problems with the profession. Although it has literally been a life saver for some of my relatives.  Psychiatry, and the drugs are definitely necessary for the people that do harm to themselves and others.  In the old days people would be in asylums, prison, executed, homeless, or dead from suicide.  I believe that has been reduced with proper treatment and medication.

While some progress has been made, the recent reign of the "mainstreaming" theory, in practice, released and continue to do so, men and women, essentially non-functional in our society due to mental illness. They first drug them to reduce any threat of violence to themselves or others. Then they are deemed "cured" and you see many of them among the homeless. They are still incapable of functioning in our world but, they are officially "cured" and the believers in this failed theory all pat themselves on the back, sip their Cosmos and tell each other how enlightened they are and what good they have done for those poor people. the same poor people presently going through the trash behind the 4 star restaurant they are eating in.

Squirl, I'm glad that your relatives have been helped.  I just got an email from a chiropractor who has studied naturopathy since the 50's - he lives in a nearby town.  I sent him this video & he told me about how his son's life was really messed up by the wrong diagnosis...  several years later, the shrink tell him & his son - "I made the wrong diagnosis."  Lots of good that does now.

I've just seen too much working w/veterans who have PTSD, substance abuse & other psychological problems...  the psychiatrists mean well on the whole, but they are just following the recommendations of the pharmaceutical companies...  if you watch this video it will definitely make you a lot more skeptical of many of the treatments.
