Hey guys, my name is Jon. Im new to the world of cabins and land ownership as i just purchased a home in Salt Lake City 3 years ago. Im looking at expanding that and purchasing some remote land to build a cabin for a getaway. Im still 2-3 years out as im still in school and want to see where i move to after college for my career in software engineering before i settle on a location but me and the wife are very partial to north eastern Arizona or south eastern Utah as the temps are more mild in the winter and a longer growing season meaning more food, more often. This is going to be the primary location we look for work.

When i start looking at this subject, it is such a huge undertaking and cant help but feel a bit overwhelmed so i am looking forward to finding lots of information and help!

Thanks everyone in advance and cant wait to start contributing to this forum!

First off welcome  w* neighbor well we are from neighboring Idaho near Boise.  I lived in SLC for a year and a half back in the late 80's working for Amtrak.

There are several here that are active in your area and one posts stuff from down around Saint George - Cedar City area.  You might do a search for them.

"Yard by yard, life is hard.  Inch by inch, life's a cinch"---Same goes for building.  If you try to visualize the entire project before you start, it's overwhelming.  If you're content with what can be reasonably done any particular day, never set a deadline, but always move forward you'll enjoy the whole project more.  Same's true after you're done--- you can see the finished place, you can recollect individual steps, but it's too much to take in all at once.  There is no part of building a house that's difficult.

There's a lot of good points people threw in with this thread--- http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=11843.msg152146#msg152146

No idea why 'deadline' is highlit with an ad.  Don't click on it.  Your tower will explode.
Find what you love and let it kill you.

Like flying van said, Every time I go to my cabin, i have a list of what I want to get done.  So far every time I have gone I have accomplished my goal.  Some times I even get a few things done.  If you break it down like that it keeps it from getting really overwhelming as if you look at the whole thing it is really overwhelming.  Good luck you will do fine.  One step at a time.
