On Page 8 of the 1 ½ story plans under the Porch and Deck Details, it states that the hip roof has a 2x4 rafter with a 1x6 shiplap.  Can someone illustrate this setup (i.e. picture) and the reason why a 2x6 rafter without a shiplap is not used instead?

Never looked at the plans but does it simply mean that the finished ceiling over the porch, as per plans, is 1x6 shiplap? Kind of like this:

Thanks.  That makes perfect sense.

That ceilings is T&G, more than likely either 2x6 T&G if it's a floor space above  or 1x6 T&G if it's attic space above,   not ship-lap.

Can you take a photo and post it  of that page in question , I think you're reading something wrong , or presenting it wrong.
When in doubt , build it stout with something you know about .

I presented the statement word for word from the plans.  While I would be happy to post a picture of the statement in question, it would not be proper without John Raabe's written approval, given that the plans are for sale.  As a result, this may be a question that John can best answer or someone that have purchased the plans.

The detail shows a 2x4 rafter with 1x6 shiplap sheathing nailed on top of the rafters with shingles above that sheathing. The detail is for exposed rafters and an exposed board deck showing underneath rather than ply or osb exposed below. I do this method with 1x6 T&G and then cover it with 7/16" osb to provide a good nail base. I would probably put ceiling joists and a level ceiling in this porch though. Note the 2x4 rafter is for a 6' porch and jumps to a 2x6 for the optional deeper porch.

OK, I understand.  I also notice the 2X6 setup for the deeper porch design.  Thanks for the help on this.
