Maybe not exactly as the author has portrayed it, but something of a similar vein is certainly possible.

I'm not looking for a general critique of the story, just sharing a (IMO) well researched post-disaster story.

Yes, you'll have to register.  Yes, the site contains some really gross stories that I don't go near with a 10' mouse click.

Yes, this story contains some sex scenes - I skim over those areas to get to the next 'good' part and it ain't another depiction of consensual sex.

Oh, I have no connection to the site except as a annual subscriber.  I don't know if non-subscribers have access to the category search function or not - but if you do click on the "Post Apocalypse" category and sort by scores.  There are several dozen excellent stories in that genera.  Some hopelessly improbable and some that seem like my own worst nightmare scenarios.

Like SciFi?  A huge number of great stories in that genera too.
