Frank, did the acupuncture cure the trees ills?   
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

That slice was taken about 4' up from the ground.  Below that was a large swelling of the tree trunk, and my teeny little Stihl would have been seriously taxed. 

Hmmmm.. No.  The patient was not assisted by acupuncture!

The biggest standing tree around us. Must be an oldie. Nothing much by PNW standards.
