We plan on getting a 5500 to 6500 watt backup generator later this year and I'll also be looking for a smaller compressor to run air tools such as frame nailer, brad nailer, and some basic car tools like ratchets.

Rigid has a small two tank compressor that has a single from wheel and handles to make it easy to move which I'm interested in.  How do I determine if the compressor and generator will be compatible especially at compressor start up?

Somewhere in the Rigid literature you should be able to find the current draw (wattage) for both steady running and for the "surge" or start-up current draw. You will need a generator that can meet both current requirements.

You'll be fine... A 5500 / 6000W generator can start a well pump motor.  A small compressor will not even be noticed.
