Forgot to say...the guys over at FHB like it...and they turn their noses up, way up, at vinyl.

That picture from Certainteed's web site does look very nice. I was in Home Depot today and they are selling a Cement siding in a shingle format. I only briefly looked at it so I don't remember the brand. I'll be back in the store later this week and when I do I check it out again. Home Depot also sells the Hardie panels but I like the look of this Certianteed's product very much. Thanks Daddymem for posting the link.

See the river rock on the porch?

That's what I was talking about for your fireplace surround.  Not real.  Flat backs.  Put it up like tile.
If river rock not your thing, there are other profiles.

I think the new stuff looks quite real...even up close.  Trouble with the river rock is the corners.  See that line running straight down?  Those are special corner pieces.  Wouldn't see that if the rocks were real.  

But real rock takes a mason and some skill born of lots of practice.  Especially an indoor project.
