After several years of thinking about it, I finally decided to replace the carpet on the stairs with oak treads.  We replaced the carpet once, and wish we had just done it then.  Here are a few pics for anyone interested.

General process I have planned:

1. Strip the carpet.
2. Measure the rough carpentry for code.
3. Procure suitable oak treads.  Dry fit and recheck for code.
4. Cut the lip off the existing rough framed treads.
5. 1/4" plywood for the risers.
6. Fit the new treads.
7. Inspection

The stairs are done and came out far better than I could have hoped for.  A lot of work, but a great addition to the home.  All that is left is some trim work and to cover the screw holes with the plugs.
