shed roof..pros and cons.

Hi all.
I recently bought 10 acres on one of the lesser known gulf islands in british columbia, canada. I am looking at starting to build on it next year, and because I will be working mostly alone, ease of construction is important!
One design I like is the basic 16x28 house, (from the victorias cottage plan).
Although I prefer the look of a steep gable roof, it seems to me that a shed roof would be easier, safer and cheaper to build. The island gets little snow but lots of rain.
Any thoughts?

I guess it depends on what you want, but with the shed roof you wouldn't have the character if the Victoria.  You would also lose the overhead space.  If it was me and I didn't think I culd do it alone, I would try to arrange some help for that portion of the job.  I have done a couple similar roofs alone and have always been able to work it out to do it alone.  

Jimmy Cason made a wood horse assistant to put against he house to hold the sheets within reach.

You may also try to arrange help for that part of the project or at least someone to be able to call the rescue chopper. :-/

With thought, planning, being careful, etc. you can raise a small gable roof like needed here by oneself. A helper would be easier of course.

There's a book on John's book list   http://www.countryplans.com/books.html  (third one down) called Working Alone, that has a number of helpful ideas on getting things done by oneself.

I'm going with a less steep pitch roof (5:12) to make the roof a little easier. As well I don't really want nor need the upstairs space with a ladder or stairway. IMO, it will look better than a shed roof though.

Sheds can have some interesting applications. They can work quite well as a compound of small buildings, especially when not all facing the same direction.
