General Forum / Levelling Joists
Last post by rothbard - Today at 10:34:37 AM
I am about to put subfloor in.  I used the crawlspace design with 2x12 20' long joists (select structural).  Curious if anyone here did any levelling techniques on their joists.  I discovered after I already finished framing the floor that the crowning and warps in such long joists can lead to quite significant different from one to the next.  I think since I used SS lumber I can get away with planing them down quite a bit if needed (up to 3/4" or so), but also curious if anyone has just scabbed segments of smaller lumber on the sides to level the tops or shimmed them.

This is my first time working with subflooring.  But I have no interior load bearing walls.  Honestly don't care if it's not level, just curious just how bad I can get away with on uneven levelness of joist tops with 3/4" plywood.

Version 3.5.2 - 05.30.2024
- Enabled ceiling insulation for floor trusses: Batt, Blown-in.
- Enabled ceiling insulation for I-Joist and Lumber floors: Batt, Blown-in.
- Fixed a bug with ceiling gypsum for inset floors (I-joist and Lumber).
- Fixed a minor bug with joist hangers for common lumber sizes for inset floors.

Honestly I didn't want to spend too much time updating this module since the new Floor plugin will supersede it, however since I do intend on retaining it within the Truss plugin for the foreseeable future, I thought it best to bring it up to speed with the other truss assemblies, and add the insulation option.

Some of these updates seem small now and very incremental however they all take time and energy and they usually involve fairly tedious updates to the attribute library code and the HTML menus.

The Truss plugin overall probably still has the most work that needs to be done of all the plugins.  Compared to the Wall plugin this plugin has many partially finished tools and features and still certain trusses that are missing advanced options.  The work will go on.

Quote from: rothbard on May 22, 2024, 12:03:43 PMWhy not just ask the Raabes?  I doubt he's making a killing selling $300 plans to a handful of DIY people, which is rare enough these days especially now that most places are regulated into oblivion.

FWIW the dude got started in the peace corps for god sake, living in Kurdi gunds of Rojhilat probably surviving off of naan, chai, and cheese.  I've lived with those people, I don't think the scamming sort would last 2 years out there, part of the reason why I was attracted to Mr. Raabe's plans in the first place.

The guy has never contributed to this forum and then comes on complaining that the owners are trying to make a little bit of money.  I will never fault someone for trying to make a living, but I will fault someone for trying to get something free without being willing to contribute/work....I think its called being entitled, but what do I know....

After all of this if you want no fastener applications to show several things are acceptable. DAP or Elmer's plastic wood will do the trick, but sanding is required. Caulking nail screw heads can be tricky.. however if you are priming before painting good primers, followed by a paint and primer product will do a decent job of it for you.
