plywood tongue and groove subflooring- knock it together tight or leave a gap? I've heard both ways.

Lightly butt the T&G edges together, there will be sufficient spacing on that joint if done like that. Spece the square cut 4 foot edges 1/8" apart.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
