Backwoods Solar sells a water heater element that's suitable for a diversion load. It has a 1" thread so it fits most if not all Suburban brand RV heaters. Not attwoods as far as I know. They are 3/4" I think.

Backwoods also has air heater resistance elements suitable for diversion loads. They have 12 and 24 VDC sizes.

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
