We have a 30x40 barn and I had planned on putting up 4 to 5 light fixtures across the center however I found a metal halide 80 watt fixure real cheap and it would light up the barn enough until I put in dropped fixtures.  Is a metal halide fixture safe to use in the barn?

30x40 is a very large area for 1 light, are you putting in large metal halide lights like a school gym would have? i believe they are over 400 watts.

I believe the concern here is whether it might cause a fire or explosion. This would depend on what the barn contains.
I am not knowledgable about this other than I iknow there is a risk under certain conditions. There should be some
agricultural organization that could answer this, or someone on this forumn.
