Hi all, I have a question on modifying my 24 x 24 post/beam garage. I currently have 1 sliding door on the gable end, 12' wide. I would like to get my travel trailer inside the building but it is too tall as the header over the door is only around 7 ft. There are 2 corner posts and 1 center post on the gable ends. The tops of the posts are same ht. as the top of the "headers". As we're talking the gable end, can I safely assume there is not much weight carried on this area? I was thinking I could temporarily remove and relocate the "header" about 3 ft. higher to accomodate the trailer. Another issue here is because of the roof pitch, I won't be able to get the header to lay directly over the post.

I'm sure my description leaves a little to be desired but hopefully you get the idea.

Does anyone think that this can be done?

I'll see about getting a pic.....(or sketch)

I think it can be done depinding the frame you have and the size of your timbers. You could build a king post style bent (truss) out of it and extened the knee brace and the center post up  3 feet also. There is a lot of weight on the gables.

Diffidently need pictures.  I agree with Whitlock.  With a little jacking and a some proper support while you make the 'remodel' it should be a safe 'do-able' thing.
