i just picked up an old stihl that has been sitting for years that had a little gas in it.  i've emptied it out and am wondering what to run through it (if anything) to clean it.   anyone know??

Will it run at all?  If it will start maybe some fuel injector cleaner at a higher than normal dose. It worked once for me. I've never tried Sea Foam, but have heard it mentioned.

no.. won't start.  i'll try some fuel injector cleaner... tks.

Squirl

I like basic carb cleaner, it also doubles as a good starting fluid.

CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a 2 cycle motor and running it without mix is running it without oil.

Turn it upside down with the gas cap off. Pull the throttle and crank it a couple of times. That should get all the old stuff out of the carb.

Put in a good amount of sea foam. Take the choke off and squirt some in the carb. Crank it ywo or three times with the throttle open and set it down for a couple of days.

Mix up some oil and put some in an oil squirt can.

Repeat the upside down and crank routine to get the seafoam out. Fill with mix. Put a new spark plug in and squirt some of the mix (about 3 squirts) in the carb with th choke open. Choke it nd crank until it starts.

You should never use ether. Use the squirt can trick. The saw will last a good long time.

My friend - a mechanic says acetone will dissolve old gas also -

Acetone is even nastier than gasoline though when it comes to fumes.
