Do they have chiggers in CA, Glenn?  When we lived in WI, people didn't know what they were, and I never had a single chigger bite the whole time we lived there (though the mosquitoes more than made up for it.)  Here, you can end up with chiggers just standing in tall grass too long, or picking wild blackberries, etc.  They itch like crazy....That's what her bites appeared to be.  Serves her right.  My great aunt said the other day she didn't know when they were ever going to get around to arresting her... seems like law enforcement is moving really slowly, but I figure they're just trying to give her enough rope to thoroughly hang herself.

Looking up the definition I say not exactly.

We have one we call a kissing bug but the pix is not the same.  It has about a 1/8 inch round flat body and likes bedding  and biting.

The other thing we have mostly in the spring but nearly any time around water is tic's - deer and bears carry them all ofver as well as dogs getting them if not treated.  Of course we may get one too if not careful but not often.

In the valley there are sand fleas that also like cats and dogs and people.

chiggers itch as bad or worse than a tick bite, but don't think they carry Rocky mt. spotted fever or Lyme disease.  We also have a lot of the tiny seed ticks here.  I hate those things.  I figure she probably got bit hiding out when the searches were going on looking for her.
