Title: Gmail Oddities
Post by: MountainDon on December 14, 2010, 12:14:39 AM
Did you know the  "dot" in a gmail address is meaningless?

That is the email address trythis@gmail is the same as try.this@gmail.com or for that matter t.r.y.t.h.i.s@gmail.com. Mail sent to any of those all end up in the same gmail account. Gmail disregards the "dot" in everything ahead of the "@".

Also adding  "+" and some extra text still sends everything to the same email account.

trythis+crazy@gmail.com  or  trythis+spam@gmail.com all end up the the trythis.gmail.com account.

Did you know that Google targets advertising on things you write about in your private e-mails.

It's not like the government isn't scanning everything you write, but some are opposed to their search engines reviewing their private e-mails and suggesting purchases for them.

The person in the article who confronted them about it said they told him or her - don't remember..... that their virus and other scanner engine does it - not a person - no need for concern.  The person writing went back to clunky MS Outlook.

That info is in the user guide.    I don't get Google ads. I have Google forward the email to my Thunderbird. Never seen an ad there.  I sort of use Gmail like I use throw away prepaid cell phones.

The neat thing with the dots is I can create different email addresses for use where I don't care to use my real email address just by moving the "dots".

Cool.. I like it for back up and as an extra for an emergency return of my account from Microsoft when somehow my access accidentally gets destroyed.
