I have looked everywhere locally for a decent metal 5 gallon gas can but no luck. It seems plastic is the new king of this item as well. I recently found that Northern Tools carries retro 5 gallon Jerry cans as well as others. At $40 that's more than I wanted to pay, but still less than the military surplus I've found.

The cans arrived today and they are very well made and heavy duty. Not sure about the safety spout attachment though.
Have been getting things ready for winter storms (power outages): extra gas cans, Sta-bil, extra lighting, 2cycle oil for chainsaw, lantern mantels, white gas, etc.

Aside from that, grainger has the metal cans too. proud of them price-wise, but they have the good quality metal cans.
As for winter, dont forget the freezer full-o-deer-meat, and the generator to keep it frozen as well.
Have a 5500 Watt generator now, looking for a 7,000-8,000 one in the future.
Probably no deer meat this year :(...unless I can find a farmer to let me hunt on his land. That's one problem I never had when I lived in Montana.
I have an assortment of gas cans. All plastic, but none of them the garden variety ones that are found in most places. Blitz seems to have the consumer market corned since Rubbermaid/Gott quit making their cans many years ago. Blitz are crap as far as I am concerned. I have three Rubbermaid/Gott in 5 gallon size and an old old one in 1 and two in 3 gallon sizes. But they are not available any more.
The best can on the market now is made by Scepter, a Canadian company. I believe they make the current cans the military uses. Not cheap either, but I like them at least as much as the old Rubbermaid/Gott cans that I mentioned. Plastic doesn't rattle, rust, dent, and that's what I like about them. They are not C.A.R.B. compliant though. They do fit the old metal military racks and use the same spout although there is also a plastic spout made. Scepter makes both military and a consumer line. I've never seen a consumer can up close, but they are different from the military model.

Not a fan of the new Blitz safety valve for sure. We have 2 plastic tanks and both valves leak. >:( Operator error ??? or faulty product ??? These Blitz, "Jerry" style cans appear to be very well made, heavy gauge metal, stamped and welded seams, metal bungs with o-ring seal. Dad has a fairly old round metal gas can, Eagle is the brand. He has wanted a few more metal ones for long term storage so I ordered those to see if he likes them. If they pass muster will probably order 2 more. We haven't had the rusting problem with the Eagle can, but it is kept indoors and new fuel or Sta-bil is added often.
Actually these are pretty cool metal cans.... ;)

At the next gunshow, pick up a few metal military cans. I have 5 of them I paid seven dollars each for.
I've been using the 5 gallon plastic jugs leftover from our racing day's. strong, dot certified, and never have to worry about any rust issues. I'll store gas in some with stabil and it doesn't affect the plastic. I now use the red ones for gas and my yellow ones for diesel. go to speedway motors site, or any number of racing sites and find them. range in price is 20 bucks to 40 bucks depending on the brand. I bought mine in the 90's for 14 dollars, so, I guess the price hasn't really gone up that much.
