The Tiny House Newsletter posted a link last week to a company that makes Full-Size Caboose Kits:

Holy cow me being a almost retired railroader I wished I would have never seen that. [waiting]

I always wanted to make a caboose into a cabin.  Especially if I could find one with one of the old good caboose stoves.  Maybe nothing better than the comfort and feel of one when you have been out in a blizzard walking your train because you have lost your air or a hot box.  The engineer pulls the train by you slowly about 10 MPH.   The caboose approaches your hand goes for that curved grab iron on the end.  With the movement of the train up you go.  Your foot hits the first step, it feels good.  Up the steps you go only two more.  Up on the porch, you stamped your feet a couple times to knock the snow off and swung the door open and stepped in.  It was warm and toasty....  But it was also warm and toasty in the summer time as well.   ;)  That was railroading.

A long, long, long, time ago I read an article about someone in upstate new york buying a caboose and having track laid to his property to get it there. I think they laid a section, moved the caboose
lifted the track behind and put it in front, etc.
Maybe some time in the 60's, not sure.

Wow- if you think about it- how hard would it be to build a fake caboose? With a little study on the net, and looking at some preserved examples, you could build a pretty convincing copy. The hardest part would be coming up with convincing wheels and undercarriage. This should really cheese the wife off!

If my husband spoke to me from his heart like Rick 91531 about something he really wanted I would melt. I suspect most women I know would. Trust and respect go both ways.  I would try talking to her. :)

Actually, my wife is very supportive of my various partially baked ideas- she's my best friend in the world. I was trying to funny  d*

If I wanted to build a caboose in the back yard, she'd be on board.

Oh my I think I will blush....   :-[  Thanks but the reality of it all is cabooses went away in about 1990 here where I work on the Union Pacific.  That was about the last time I 'pulled one' on pool freight.  I had promoted to a locomotive engineer in 1978 but the couple years I was around them as a brakeman were sure fun years for me.  But on the locals here they lasted longer.  There were times when we would all end up there or one some other crews caboose, warming up by the stove and telling tales and wondering just what was next.

Now the caboose has been replaced by a little black box.  The conductor is up on the head end with me.  We have lost the head and rear brakemen.  We look around pour another cup of coffee and wonder what is next.

I grew up with the railroad tracks near my home.  Several of my Uncles and my father worked on the railroad.  When we were kids it was great excitement to visit down at the station, sometimes they would allow us up in the caboose and let us pull the whistle. Magic on a snowy evening for a kid!
