Title: Offset rafters?
Post by: dougpete on August 13, 2010, 10:21:31 AM
Because our attic floor joists will be offset, our rafters will be offset as well - is this a problem?

Do we have to have collar ties?

Rafters will be 2 x 8 16" o.c., 10/12 pitch.

Thanks.

If you have well nailed off the attic joists to the rafters and the rafters meet at the ridge board then that takes care of the rafter tie at the bottom. They do not have to align with the studs below as long as you have double top plates. You need to also brace the connection at the top of the rafter and a collar tie across the upper 1/3 of the rafters will do this as will a metal strap over the rafter tops. Some builders do both, especially in high wind areas where you might also want hurricane clips between the rafters and the wall plates.
