Title: tankless propane water heater
Post by: nysono on July 11, 2010, 06:37:29 PM
After reading and researching for hours here and other places on the net I cant find an answer to my question.  Can I install a tankless hot water heater indoors without having electricity? My concern is with venting the exhaust.  Any suggestions on a particular model/brand?

BTW: thanks for a great forum to learn and get ideas from.  Close on 13+ acres later this month, in upstate NY, and then building 24 x 32 1.5 story with walkout basement....more details to follow

I'm looking at this Vent-Free Instant Tankless Gas Water Heater from ExcelAmerica on Amazon for $209

http://www.amazon.com/Excel-Natural-Ventfree-tankless-heater/dp/B002ATWR8W (http://www.amazon.com/Excel-Natural-Ventfree-tankless-heater/dp/B002ATWR8W)

It has electronic ignition and a ODS sensor.  I don't see it running for extended periods and I will have a CO detector nearby.

We have the Bosch HX125 LP model, since superseded.

It has a dynamo to generate spark and can be vented with a 5 inch vent requiring no electricity.  Some depends on the installation, but we are not even using a vent stack as it is mounted on an outside wall.

Be sure and match your incoming water temp to the btu capacity of the heater----my well water is about 38 F and my Rennai tankless is 199000 btu output----does fine. Low btu may result in lukewarm water. Avoid ventless models (they are not legal in some jurisdictions) and not usually available in the higher btu models.  Also, safe, code compliant installations can be a little complicated for a DIY.  ???
