Title: Foundation/Floor Joists
Post by: marty on October 19, 2005, 09:31:07 AM
OK...I'm sure this is something I should be able to figure out myself...but I thought I would ask for help.

I'm building a 16X16 cabin using a pier foundation supporting two sixteen foot beams 12 feet apart.  I want to lay floor joists across those two beams with a two foot cantilever on each side.  I expect to have the sides of the cabin parallel to the beams, (over the cantilevers).

I'm trying to decide if I should use 2X10s or what what for floor joists.  Does anyone have a quick way of figuring that?

This is from the  Did I cantilever too much?  Thread on this forum.

Here is a diagram of how it is set up.  So it is a little different than the previous post in that I will have a counterweight on the other end.

Two foot cantilevers over the beams is what I've done in the Little House cabins. This works fine for a one story load and actually makes the floor joists stiffer than if the beams had been directly under the walls.

Using 2x10 @ 16" should be more than strong. I would fill that cavity completely with insulation and you will have a good solid floor.

Thanks John...appreciate the feedback.  I'll do just that.

For anything over a 1 story load, would it be better to move the beams to the outer edge?
